Art House Holland
Leiden, Netherlands
The House of Misconceptions takes you into the world of implicit and explicit perceptions and biases that people have about society, particularly about each other and groups of ‘others’. These ‘others’ can stand out due to their different skin color or different cultural and religious habits and norms. Do we indeed fear the unknown? And, if so, to what extent are we aware of this? How does it hinder us from leading a full and rich life? House of Misconceptions invites you to engage with the subconscious side of your perceptions and to enter a dialogue about this with yourself and each other.
The production is developed and designed by artists Sven Meijers and Abdalla Daif, in which a journey takes place passing public and political opinions contrasting daily life. It is an unexpected journey through space, time and thoughts while crawling under the skin of “the other”
Art, science and society
For the last couple of months we have been working together with prof. Maartje van der Woude, Nanou van Iersel and the students of the Honours Master Class “Leiden Revisited: Social Control and Social Cohesion in Insecure Times” (Honours Academy, Leiden University) on “Othering” in Leiden Noord. The House of Misconceptions is the artistic production of the data collected during the research period, which is produced into an art installation and performance.
